Fiction w/ Kiraeyl: Chasing the Rainbow

The rainbow was many colors. Brilliant shades of blues, reds, violets, yellows... The rainbow seemed to stretch forever as far as the eye could see.

Lily loved rainbows. They were her favorite. She had grown up believing that if she were to reach the end of the rainbow, there would be beautiful fields of poppies and marigolds with small faeries flitting here and there in excitement. The end of the rainbow was supposed to be magical and a portal to the other side.

Lily grew up. She no longer believed in faeries or the magical place at the end of the rainbow. But she still loved rainbows.

The clunking sound of the wipers threw her out of her thought. It was a rainy cold day where she lived, and all she had wanted to do was get home. She had driven all night to return to the place she had grown up. Driven so many hours across the continent because someone she loved was dying: her mother.

Her mother had been the one to tell her the stories of the faeries and about the end of the rainbow. Her mother had lovingly placed faerie stickers on Lily's bedroom walls and painted the ceiling with beautiful vibrant colors of the rainbow. Her mother had been the one to take Lily on fantastic adventures. They called it "Chasing the Rainbow". They would pack a picnic basket with snacks and meals, and a bottle of sparkling water, and they would hop on their bikes and go during a soft rainstorm. Lily could hear the ghost of their laughter as she turned into the drive of her family home. She took a big breath, and walked in.

Her mother was laying on her bed. She looked so small, so fragile. Her normally beautiful silver hair had turned to a stark white. Her crystal blue eyes stared unseeing at the ceiling. Lily stifled a sob. This was not the mother she remembered. Her mother had beautiful chocolate brown hair and the most sparkling loving blue eyes she had ever seen. She used to tell her friends that she had wished she had her mothers eyes instead of the drab hazel that her father had blessed her with.

Lily walked slowly to her mother's side and placed a hand on her mother's hand. So cold. So weak. The skin felt so thin. Lily wiped away a tear and sat down on a chair by the bed. Her father left the room to give her privacy.

Lily leaned in and whispered into her mother's ear, "I saw a rainbow outside today. It reminded me of the fun we had. You gave me the best childhood. I believed in faeries and of the magical place at the end of the rainbow. I stopped chasing rainbows a long time ago, but I will forever remember chasing them with you." Lily closed her eyes, leaned back into the chair, and started sobbing.

A small whisper floated by... "At the end of the rainbow... there is a magical place. Faeries dance and play and giggle all day. There are fields of marigolds.... and poppies.... I would like to go back to this place....." Lily's eyes flew open. Her mother was looking at her lovingly. Her sparkling blue eyes clear and bright. "Lily, let's go chase a rainbow.... One last time."

Lily wiped away her tears and smiled. "Okay, momma."

She helped her mother get dressed into a pretty blue dress. Lily helped her father carry her mother to her car and place her softly onto the seat. Lily got a blanket and placed it over her mother.

The rainbow was still there, bright and beautiful. Her mother smiled at it and reached out towards it.

Lily started the car and drove.

Her mother giggled as they drove towards the end of the rainbow. Lily smiled. Memories flooded her mind as they drove on and on for what seemed like hours.

"Mom, have you ever reached the end of a rainbow?" Lily asked.

"Oh Lily, I came from the end of a rainbow..." her mother said softly. Lily glanced over towards her mother and gave a puzzled look. She looked back to the road and slammed on the brakes.

Fields of marigolds and poppies suddenly appeared in front of the car. The road just stopped where the field's edge lay. Lily sat there dumbfounded. Had they reached the end of the rainbow? Was that possible?

Her mother opened the door and stepped outside. She giggled and reached out towards the vibrant colors that surrounded the field. As Lily's mother softly shuffled through the marigolds and poppies towards the center of the field, a bright light flashed in front of Lily. Lily covered her eyes and ducked out of the way. On the wind she heard a familiar voice, one that sounded musical and loving and full of life....

""Lily, my princess, thank you for chasing the rainbow with me."
